The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has officially commenced the full-scale reconstruction of Terminal 1 at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos. Passengers are urged to factor in the impact of the works on traffic flow and airport access, and to plan ahead accordingly.

🛠What’s Happening?
Terminal 1 is being stripped back to its core framework, then fully rebuilt from mechanical to cosmetic systems—plumbing, electricals, HVAC and more. FAAN says the project, budgeted at ₦712.25 billion, was approved by the Federal Executive Council on 1 August 2025 as part of a broader ₦919.1 billion national aviation upgrade package.
Work is expected to take approximately 22 months to complete.
#👣 Passenger Advisory: What You Should Do
- Leave earlier than usual to avoid missing your flight during peak congestion.
- Follow all traffic directions and observe parking rules—space is tight due to construction zones.
- Only passengers should visit the airport during this period. Friends, family, or non-travellers are kindly asked to avoid coming by.
🧠Looking Ahead…
FAAN plans to maintain flight operations through the construction. Details such as temporary check-in halls, redirect signage, and other contingency arrangements will be in place to minimise disruption and ensure a relatively smooth traveller experience. These enhancements are designed to elevate MMIA’s standards to global best practice, improve passenger flow, and solidify Lagos’ role as West Africa’s aviation hub.
With MMIA Terminal 1 undergoing a ₦712 billion reconstruction over the next two years, FAAN is putting measures in place to minimise disruption. But travellers should remain proactive—arrive early, follow traffic rules, and limit airport visits to only those flying. These improvements will ultimately deliver a safer, modernised gateway worthy of Nigeria’s global stature.
