Lagos Chambers of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) Hotel and Tourism Group made a mark recently, as the group, led by the President of the chamber Mr. Gabriel Idahosa FCA, presented Peace Walk and Paper Presentation to the Chairman, House Committee on Tourism, Art and Culture, Lagos State House of Assemble, Honorable Bonu Solomon in honor of the 2024 World Tourism Day with the theme: Tourism and Peace, at Alausa, Ikeja-Lagos. Hon. Bonu Solomon, was ably represented by the Deputy Majority Leader Hon Adedamola Kasunmu.

In his address, the President of LCCI, Mr Gabriel Idahosa started by congratulating and thanking the LCCI Hotel and Tourism Group for organizing the Peace Walk and Paper Presentation to create awareness amongst the general public on tourism’s integral role in driving economic growth, delivering sustainability, supporting local communities, and promoting peace and health

Mr. Idahosa said that the Nigerian tourism and hospitality sector is evolving, though constrained by poor maintenance of public assets and limited investments in infrastructure. The sector, on a good note, is supported by Nigeria’s sophisticated financial system and a fast-growing technology sector. The drive towards making our cities smart and many systems driven by digital infrastructure highlights the attention on the hospitality sector. The recent revamping of the National Theatre and many more recent initiatives will spotlight Nigeria as a tourism destination in Africa.

The president said that the recently unveiled draft national tourism policy aims to brand Nigeria as a unique destination and pave the path for Nigeria’s global tourism leadership. To get there, we need to showcase our vast array of beautiful natural scenery and rich culture to the world, and articulate strategies to reposition and advance the tourism sector as a critical driver of economic diversification.

In concluding his speech, the LCCI boss calls for the need for the government to collaborate with the private sector in implementing the national tourism policy. Further, we must address the country’s insecurity challenges and increase investment in tourism and hospitality. One example is investing and ensuring the maintenance of heritage sites. Another is the investment in transport infrastructure to assure connectivity with rural areas and other areas with great tourism potential.

In his remark, the Deputy Majority Leader Hon Adedamola Kasunmu, who was representing the Chairman, House Committee on Tourism, Art and Culture, Lagos State House of Assemble, Honorable Bonu Solomon, said that tourism has the potential not only to showcase our rich cultural heritage and natural beauty but also to foster understanding and dialogue among diverse communities. In a nation as vibrant and multifaceted as ours, tourism can serve as a bridge, uniting us in our shared humanity and promoting lasting peace.

Hon. Kasunmu stated that Nigeria is home to a wealth of attractions, from the breath-taking landscapes of our national parks to the rich history found in our ancient cities. Each region offers unique experiences that draw visitors from around the world. However, we must recognize that promoting tourism is not solely about economic gains. It is about creating a culture of peace and mutual respect. By welcoming tourists to experience our diverse traditions and stories, we encourage a spirit of tolerance and understanding that is essential for national cohesion.

He further stated that to harness the full potential of tourism as a peacebuilding tool, we must prioritize infrastructure development, safety, and community engagement. Investments in our tourism sector must go hand-in-hand with efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of both visitors and locals. Additionally, we should involve communities in tourism planning and development, empowering them to share their stories and preserve their heritage. This collaborative approach not only enhances the visitor experience but also fosters pride and ownership among local populations.

As we celebrate World Tourism Day, let us commit to embracing tourism as a catalyst for peace in Nigeria. By promoting our country as a destination of unity and hospitality, we can attract not just visitors, but allies in the pursuit of a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria. Together, we can ensure that tourism becomes a powerful force for good, enhancing lives and building bridges between people, both within our borders and beyond.

The laudable peace walk initiative to mark the World Tourism Day 2024, was rounded up with body-exercise, as i-fitness trainers took the president and some members of the LCCI Hotel and Tourism Group through some light exercise.
